Area Introductions

The main goal of this area is to collect essences for crafting all the new traps and bases.

There are two dimensions for each of the area, one is the reality and the other is twisted. (Details will be explained later on)

Area Progression Summary

This is made to help newcomers of Living Garden to get a general idea of what Living Garden is all about. Another purpose is to help hunters track easily what cheese and what petals/herbs they need to arm/collect at particular areas. (More in-depth step-by-step guide in later section)

Walkthrough Structure

Each area has two sections:

Advancement Goal

  • Advance through the areas by collecting different special cheese and catch area mice along the way to finally get a Living Chest

Essences Collection

  • This path consist of playing “Mini Games” to collect Essences

The goals of the two sections are the same (for some areas you need to do both sections at the same time), to collect enough high end Essences to craft the 3 powerful trap and the new base.

Note: some mini game is not worth doing while some are highly profitable, recommendations on which to skip and which to do are included in the guide along the way.

Step 1 – Living Garden

Power Type: Hydro
Recommended Trap: Oasis Water Node Trap
Recommended Cheese: Gouda/SB+
Loot: Dewthief Petal
Mini Game: “Pour”
Hidden Area: Twisted Garden
Dimension: Reality

  • Advancement Goals
    • It’s known to best hunt in large packs of gouda, so that you can try to collect  1 I-essences on first run or 3 I-essences in one run, the common packs to collect Dewthief Petals are as follow:
      • 550 Gouda (0.41|1.34)
      • 1,200 Gouda (1.25|2.94)
      • 3,000 Gouda (3.23|7.69)
      • 10,000 Gouda (11.19|25.79)
      • Note:
        – Recommended going for 1.2k gouda (if not using magic essences for cheese convertion) or 550 gouda (if using magic essences for cheese convertion all the way) to get your Phantasmic Oasis Trap on your first run.
        –  Format: (a|b)
a = number of I-essences at the end without SB+ cheese conversion all the way
b = number of I-essences at the end with SB+ cheese conversion all the way
        Spreadsheet calculationsLiving Garden I-Essences Calculator
    • Convert the Dewthief Petals to Dewthief Camembert in the Cheese Shoppe and use them to hunt in Lost City and Sand Dune ( more explained in step 2)
    • The watering mini game is not recommended for this stage, you can just focus on getting Dewthief Petals.
    • After using up all gouda you can move to step 2
  • Essences Collection – Watering Mini Game
    • As you were hunting for Dewthief Petal you would be also getting Aleth Essences. Keep doing the same to gather Aleth
    • Arm the Sponge Charms purchased from the charm store in Living Garden (1 Aleth Essence for 1 Sponge Charm). Upon catching a mouse with the charm, you are guaranteed to have 1 dewdrop as loot. The dewdrops can be activated by “Pour” to attract Thristy Mouse.  Thirsty Mouse always drop 1 B-Essence and 1 C-Essence.
    • Pour System
      • For first 10 dewdrops before activating “Pour” you have 1 Thirsty Mouse Attractions per dewdrop (e.g. if you have 8 dewdrips when you activate “Pour” you can attract Thirsty Mice for 8 times.)
      • Starting from the 11th dewdrops you will get 2 additional Thirsty Mouse Attractions per dewdrop (e.g if you have 11 dewdrips when you activate “Pour” you can attract Thirsty Mice for 12 times).
      • At 20 dewdrops your tank will be full, rewards you with  a total of 35 Thirsty Mouse Attractions.
      • The following is a table to help you understand better.
      • The HUD will instruct hunters to disarm Sponge Charms when Pour is active
      • Thirsty Mice are not 100% attracted while Pour is active
    • Efficiency Tips
      • Always collect 20 A-Essence before purchasing the Sponge Charms
      • Collect 20 dewdrops before activating the “Pour” to obtain a 35 Thirsty Mouse Attractions (35 turns to catch Thirsty Mouse).
      • The best way to obtain B and C- Essences is catching Thirsty Mouse. Upgrading from A -> B -> will be less efficient.
    • The essences are required to craft higher essences and different combinations of these essences are required to trap the new 3 power traps. (Check your Book of Living Garden Recipes)

Step 2 – Lost City and Sand Dunes

Lost City
Power Type: Arcane
Recommended Trap:  ACRONYM
Required Cheese: Dewthief Camembert (Living Garden)
Loot: Dreamfluff Herbs
Mini Game: Purification
Hidden Area: Cursed City
Dimension: Reality

Sand Dunes
Power Type: Shadow
Recommended Trap:  Reaper’s Perch
Required Cheese: Dewthief Camembert (Living Garden)
Loot: Duskshade Petal
Mini Game: Grubling Stampedes
Hidden Area: Sand Crypts
Dimension: Reality

  • Advancement Goals
    • For these 2 areas it’s recommended to do both the mini games while doing the advancement goals, please read the Essences Collection section below for details.
    • Use half the Dewthief Camembers to hunt in Lost City to collect Dreamfluff herbs and the other half in Sand Dune to collect Duskshade petals. (try to balance the amount of herbs and petals)
    • Use both Dreamfluff herbs and Duskshade petals to exchange Duskshade Camembert cheese in any of the three areas’ cheese shoppe
    • Now move back to Living Garden (Step 3)
  • Essences Collection
    • Lost City – Cursed! Mini Game
      • This area is cursed and thereby you can’t attract the Essence Collector mouse.
      • Go to the charm store and get 2 Searcher Charm ( with 2 Aleth Essences) at a time and buy more as you go, until catch mice to break the curse with the charm and purify the city.
      • Curse is lifted, unequip the Searcher Charms
      • Mice you catch here will drop either Aleth, Ber, and Cynd Essences or a combination of the three
      • If you encounter or caught a cursed mouse while the curse is lifted, the city will return back to be cursed, then you will need to re-arm your Searcher Charm to re-lift the curse
    • Sand Dunes – Grubling Stampedes Mini Game
      • Arm your Dewthief Camembert, while you hunt you have a chance to set off a Grubling Stampede. The HUD will notify you when you had set off a Stampede then arm 15 Grumbling Chow Charms (Arm the charm if and only if the HUD says “Grubling Stampede Alert”)
      • You have 15 hunts to attract and catch the Grubling mice during a stampede. Make sure you have enough charms before starting a Stampede.
      • Mice here drops either of Aleth, Ber, and Cynd Essence or combinations of the three. Grubling mice will drop 1 Cynd Essence. (These can be treated as retock of essences for you to get charms here, this mini game is profitable so it’s recommend to be done along with the advancement goals)

Step 3 – Living Garden Revisited

  • Advancement Goal
    • Use Duskshade Camembert cheese to hunt in the Living Garden for Carmine the Apothecary Mouse
    • Upon catching the Carmine the Apothecary you will be teleported to the Twisted Gardens. (Now you have entered the twisted dimension!)
    • Now advance to Step 4

Step 4 – Twisted Garden

Power Type: Hydro
Recommended Trap: Oasis Water Node Trap
Required Cheese: Duskshade Camembert Cheese
Loot: Graveblossom Petal
Mini Game: Watering (with dual tanks)
Area Mouse: Twisted Carmine (Requires  Lunaira Camembert)
Dimension: Twisted

  • Advancement Goal
    • Mini game in this area will help improve your catch rate for Twisted Carmine at the step 6. As you are pouring during step 6 while catching the Twisted Carmine, you will gain a great bonus of luck and power. Therefore filling up both tanks to full in this step is recommended! Read the Essences Collection section for more extensive guidelines. (It’s not recommended to pour at this point, pour only in step 6)
    • Hunt in the Twisted Garden with Duskshade Camember to collect Graveblossom Petals.
    • Now you should see that Lost City and Sand Dune will be “twisted” to Cursed City and Sand Crypts
    • After using up all your Duskshade Camember go to step 5

IMPORTANT: If you hunt in Twisted Garden with a cheese other than Duskshade Camembert you will be kicked back to the Reality dimension (Living Garden). To re-enter go back to step 3 .

  • Essences Collection
    • This system is similar to Living Garden, however now it’s dual tank and with bonus stats while pouring.
      • Poured Red Dewdrops give you 5% Power Bonus
      • Poured Yellow Dewdrops give you +5 Luck
      • Both can be poured at the same time
      • Using Lunaria while poured will not attract the Dehydrated mouse, therefore it’s great while used while catching Twisted Carmine.
    • With the system explained, to start refilling, first you need to convert Ber Essences in the charm store into 10 Red Sponge and 10 Yellow Sponge charms.
    • Collect both Red Dewdrops and Yellow Dewdrops  with the charms armed. The total hunts indicated on the HUD is the total of dewdrops from both Red and Yellow tanks. The dewdrops has same bonus system as Living Garden. Filling up both tank is the best way to go.

Step 5 – Cursed City and Sand Crypts

Cursed City
Power Type: Arcane
Recommended Trap:  ACRONYM
Required Cheese: Graveblossom Camembert
Loot: Plumpearl Herbs
Mini Game: Purification 2
Area Mouse: Essence Guardian
Dimension: Twisted

Sand Crypts
Power Type: Shadow
Recommended Trap:  Reaper’s Perch
Required Cheese: Graveblossom Camembert
Loot: Lunaria Petal
Mini Game: Grubling Stampedes 2
Hidden Area: Sand Crypt
Area Mouse: King Grub
Dimension: Twisted

  • Advancement Goal
    • The mini game in Curse City is worth doing, while the Sand Crypts is only worth doing if you have Reaper’s Perch. It is recommended to repel the curses in Curse City before starting the advancement goal in that area. (Check the Essences Collection section below for more in-depth guide)
    • With all the Graveblossom Petals from Twisted Garden, again exchange it for Graveblossom Camembert cheese in the cheese shoppe.
    • Use half of the Graveblossom Camembert in Cursed City to collect Plumpear Herbs and the other half in Sand Crypts to collect Lunaria Petals. (Again try to balance both herbs and petals)
    • Using the Pumpear Herbs and Lunaria Petals to exchange for Lunaira  Camembert in Cheese Shoppe then move to step 6

IMPORTANT: Make sure you are using the Graveblossom Camembert in both areas, as this is the twisted dimension, if you used other cheese you will be teletported back to the Reality dimension  If that happened, go to Step 3 to re-enter through Living Garden, and travel back to either Cursed City or Sand Crypt.

  • Essences Collection
    • Cursed City
      • Here there are 3 new charms to free the curse in Cursed City, which are Bravery Charm, Clarity Charm, and Shine Charm
      • This time you need to catch 1 mouse using each of the charms to repel the curse in this area
      • If you caught the cursed mouse the curse will return and you have to repel it again
    • Sand Crypts
      • Here now you can catch the King Grub mice
      • To catch the King Grub mice, you will need to use Grub Salt Charms to weaken the mice then arm Grub Scent Charm to attract it. (King Grub is only attracted when Grub Scent Charm is armed)
      • It is recommended to use 25 Grub Salt Charms  to weaken the King Grub
      • The King Grub will drop higher Essences (Up to E essences)

Step 6 – Twisted Garden Revisited

  • Advancement Goals
    • Before you start hunting here, start the pouring to get  your bonuses (Note, the pouring progress won’t be affected if you move out of this area and come back later. So don’t worry if you are not able to finish all the “hunts” before the cheese run out, just come back later)
    • Use Lunaira Camembert and catch the Twisted Carmine
      • Twisted Carmine wroth 85,250 points and 6525 gold
      • it also drop 1 Living Chest upon catching it and the chest has chance of giving the following:
        • 1 Fresh Twisted Garden Soil (100%)
        • 1 Gur Essence (100%)
        • Dewtheif Petal (50%)
        • Fel Essences (24.9%)
        • Dreamfluff Herbs (14.8%)
        • Lunaria Petal (4.6%)
        • Dewtheif Camembert (15%)
        • Duskshade Camembert (10.2%)
        • Lunaria Camembert (2%)
        • Dusksahde Petal (15.2%)
        • Graveblossom Camembert (9.6%)
        • Plumepearl Herbs (4.2%)
      • * Check HornTracker for more detail on Living Garden Chest Loots
    • Now you just have to repeat step 1-6 cycle untill you collect enough essences to craft all the new trap blueprints. (The total amount is listed in the next section and the recipe and the order to craft the traps are in later section) You will need to cycle more if you going to do the challenge stage, catching the 3 bosses!

End Goal

Your end goal is to collect the following amount of Essences:

  • 1 Est
  • 2 Fel
  • 1 Gur
  • 3 Icuri

Note: Since the release of the Rift Base, Soiled Base is no longer recommended, therefore the required essences were changed since 14th May 2013 to take out the amount needed for Soiled Base.

All these Essences are required to craft all the new traps, description of the recipes can be found in the Trap Crafting Order section below.

You may use Spheniscine’s Living Garden Essence Wizard to keep track if you had enough low tier essences to craft your way up to the required essences.

Trap Crafting Order

Having a smart order of crafting all the traps will greatly speed up the progress in this area. Following the recommended order below to craft the traps and reasons for such ordering is explained too.

1. Phantasmic Oasis Trap (Hydro)

  • Reason to priorities this trap to craft first is because Hydro trap is involved in collecting Dewtheif Petal, Graveblossom Petal and more importantly catching the Twisted Carmine! With this trap crafted your amount of petals will build up way faster as well as having way better catching rate for Twisted Carmine.
  • Crafting Recipe
    • 1 Phantasmic Oasis Trap Blueprint = Est + Fel + Icuri Essences
    • 1 Oasis Water Node Trap Parts
    • 3 Phantasmic Essence

2. Grand Arcanum Trap (Arcane)
this is assuming you have Reaper’s Perch, if not craft Clockwork Portal first

  • This is suggest to be crafted before Clockwork Portal is because Reaper’s Perch will do just fine for Sand Dune and Sand Crypt. However Lost City and Cursed City with ACRONYM is not giving pleasant catches. So having this upgrade first is much more desirable.
  • Crafting Recipe
    • 1 Grand Arcanum Trap Blueprints = 1 Gur + 1 Icuri Essences
    • 1 A.C.R.O.N.Y.M Parts
    • 1 Arcane Crystal
    • 40 Tiny Platinum Bars

3. Clockwork Portal (Shadow Trap)

  • The reason to have this crafted last is pretty much explained in the reason why crafting Grand Arcanum Trap second
  • Crafting Recipe
    • 1 Clockwork Portal Trap Blueprints = 1 Icuri Essence + 1 Fel Essence
    • 1 Clock Parts
    • 8 Umbral Capacitors

Advance Challenge Stage – Ultimate Mice

This stage is relatively hard and expensive, it is highly recommended that you craft all the trap/base upgrades before attempting this challenge.

The challenge is to catch the 3 ultimate mice (3 bosses):

Shattered Carmine

Dark Magi

King Scarab

All these mice requires a Shattering Charm to attract. To craft the Shattering Charm follow the following recipe: (Each Charm requires 1,150,000 gold, not including the cost of Prisms crafting Icuri Essence)

Epic Orb 1
Charmbits** 1,000
Icuri Essence 1
Aromatic Oil** 1

*This recipe makes 1 Shattering Charm
** Charmbits and Aromatic Oil are both available in General Store in all 3 areas
*** Shattering Charms are only consumed when one of the ultimate mice are caught

Challenge 1 – Shattered Carmine

  • Area: Twisted Garden
  • Trap Type: Hydro
  • Cheese: Lunaria Camembert
  • Charm: Shattering Charm
  • Condition: Catching while the bonuses from pouring the Dewdrops are active will be more effective
  • Loot:
    • Living Garden Theme Scrap 1
    • Shattered Chest
      • Rift Mist
      • Other sorts of goodies (could find torn pages from Plankrun’s journal)

Challenge 2 – Dark Magi

  • Area: Cursed City
  • Trap Type: Arcane
  • Cheese: Graveblossom Camembert
  • Charm: Shattering Charm
  • Condition: Must dispel all three curses
  • Loot:
    • Living Garden Theme Scrap 2
    • Dark Chest
      • Rift Stars
      • Other sorts of goodies (could find torn pages from Plankrun’s journal)

Challenge 3 – King Scarab

  • Area: Sand Crypts
  • Trap Type: Shadow
  • Cheese: Graveblossom Camembert
  • Charm: Shattering Charm
  • Condition: Max the meter (minimum of 50 grub salts)
  • Loot:
    • Living Garden Theme Scrap 3
    • Scarab Chest
      • Rift Crystal
      • Other sorts of goodies (could find torn pages from Plankrun’s journal)

Rewards of the Challenges

  • Collecting all the Theme Scraps (1, 2 & 3) and crafting them together will obtain a new Living Garden Theme for your profile.
  • Collect and open all three chests from each of the ultimate mice, will gain you all the materials needed to craft the Rift Base. Use the recipe below to craft the Rift Base:

Rift Base Blueprints* 1
Rift Mist 1
Rift Stars 1
Rift Crystal 1

*Rift Base Blueprints can be purchased from the general store for 7,500,000 golds.

This base has the most luck so far, it has good enough power bonus. However it’s a relatively less significant upgrade to previous powerful bases. I would recommend get the base if you have the spare gold else you may leave it later till the full Riftwalker Set is out.

Yes this isn’t the end of Living Garden areas, Riftwalker Set is still leave hanging to be discovered further in the near future. Evidence of this is revealed upon obtaining the Rift Base, as the description gave us hints of the existence of the Riftwalker Set.

Rift Stars-Dark Chest from Dark Magi
Rift Crystal-Scarab Chest from King Scarab

  6. January 17, 2013 at 9:25 PM

You’ll need Shattered charm to attract the boss mice, aromatic oil is selling at 1,000,000 gold with the charm store.
What can be seen up to now is that…
    Shattered Carmine is easy to catch;
    King Scarab needs at least 40 grub salt charm applied;
Dark Magi is difficult, needs to clear all curses before you can try, usually a corrupt mouse comes out and you have to clear the curses again.
No one has yet crafted ultimate charm…said to be invincible for a period of time.
There’s a lot on the Rift Base…wild guess is that you can assign specific mice on the list to be caught….think it could be upgraded.

  7. January 24, 2013 at 11:26 PM

I received 3 Lunaria Petals, 1 Rift Crystal, 2 Dol Essence, 13 Magic Essence and 1 Plankrun’s Rift Notes 1 from 1 Scarab Chest.

    I received 6 plumepearl herbs 1 Rift Stars 1 F essence 1 Plankrun’s Rift Notes 2 from 1 Dark Chest.

  9. February 26, 2013 at 7:47 PM

To catch the king scarab you ll need 50 grub salts otherwise lower than that quantity many ftcs.

      Thanks for the info

      • March 25, 2013 at 6:17 AM

I have yet crafted this charm but a friend of mine has tried to use it against dojo sensais….3 was caught – 100% catch rate but then after the 3rd catch a release of rift power dissolved the charm.

      • March 25, 2013 at 6:37 AM

      • March 25, 2013 at 6:20 AM

my guess is that the ultimate charm has a fixed quantity of invincible power which can be used to catch mice, but the ultimate power will be decreased against the catch until it drops to 0. Considering the power of sojo is 89,994, therefore my estimate that the ultimate power should be around 180,000 to 260,000.

      • March 25, 2013 at 6:30 AM

She was alone on the ultimate charm catch scoreboard 😛

Just have one question: What is your opinion in using SB+ in LG and so on? I find Gouda is patience killing for those who wants to get the weapon BP as fast as they can..

    • May 9, 2013 at 11:22 AM

Using of SB+ is not needed, Gouda will do the same. LG itself is a patience killing area. Only use SB+ on converting the cheese from petals and herbs.

the result on the excel file, does it include mini games or not? thanks.

    • May 23, 2013 at 8:28 AM

Good question, I need to check horntracker’s data see if it did include all the mini games. Will update soon.

    • May 24, 2013 at 3:54 AM

I re-checked my horntracker setup, I did include all cases, so it’s pretty much an average of doing and not doing the mini games. Which means the I-essences value estimate will be just slightly lower than the “real” number due to averages. Tho that is fine for an estimation.

    May 25, 2013 at 10:19 AM

Possible to catch king scarab and dark magi without grand arcane and clockwork portal?

    • May 25, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Your chance of catching king grub will be 21.51% (with reaper) and dark magi 33.33% (with ACRONYM) – those estimations are from small sample sizes. So I wouldn’t risk it. Especially the shattering charms cost 1.1m each.

      • jeremy
        May 25, 2013 at 9:32 PM

why would the charm be wasted if it would only be consumed upon catching king grub or magi?

  14. May 25, 2013 at 10:08 PM

    jeremy :

why would the charm be wasted if it would only be consumed upon catching king grub or magi?

Not wasting your charm, but wasting your time. Besides you will need the traps for many tournaments later. Unless you are planning to not do any tournaments and desperate to get the bosses. Why I mention the charm is because you are spending the 2.2m and 2 I-essences on the charm and end up taking so much time or even forever to catch (because only 6 total tries on the dark maki and 3 succeed according to horntracker) so the chance of you catching it within that 33.33% is very low. (This is because the 33.33% is from a tiny sample size, means inaccurate. You are putting the 2.2m and 2 I-essences at risk on the charm and when you end up want to get the trap first, you will be 2.2m short or end up had to go back and recollect your 2 I-essences. If you are willing to take those risks then go ahead, let me know how it goes! 🙂 Best of luck!

Is it effective to substitute reapers perch with cackle lantern trap? Cause I’m now a count failing at ZT… T.T

Definitely not in the sense of using it in Sand Crypts or Sand Dunes. It’s worse than Clockapult of Time

Should i really get Reaper’s Perch for the Sand Dunes/Crypts? Because getting Reaper’s Perch is very troublesome and time consuming since i only have 300 library points. I am thinking of using Clockapult for the Sand Dunes/Crypts.

    • June 10, 2013 at 12:25 AM

Clockapult will still work, but the result will not be pleasing. If you are lazy then well you can struggle through with COT. Just that you will take way longer compare to if you use reaper’s perch.

LP aren’t hard to get if you have SW, all you need to do is spam furoma assignments.

I think there is an error.
“Go to the charm store and get 2 Searcher Charm ( with 1 Aleth Essence) at a time and buy more as you go, until catch mice to break the curse with the…”
I thought you only can buy 1 Searcher Charm with 1 Aleth Essence?

    • July 29, 2013 at 10:09 AM

Yes, it should be 2 Aleth Essences for 2 Searcher Charm.

3 Lunaria Petals, 1 Dol Essence, 1 Est Essence and 1 Fel Essence

I was just wondering, you say to use 1,200 Gouda for the run, but what impact does the hothouse base have on this number since one can now earn more of the cheese loot drops?

  24. May 7, 2015 at 11:01 AM

thank you for this guide. i have worked the i essence predictor to the bone in its day. is there any chance of updating the spreadsheet to include hot house base option? also now that essences can be used for rift related purposes personally i dont craft a, b and c essences up anymore, changes the outcome a little bit. having an option to exclude essences from the summing up would thus be great as well.

keep up the good work 🙂

Hey..can I ask why is the drop rate of herbs so low in both sand crypts and cursed city? I used the recommended trap set-up but the catch rate is terrible too…any idea?
